Self Portraits in Alien Drag
Ann Drew is a Sapphic Scify Comics in-universe characterization of myself that I use as a publishing name, a zine fest persona, and a comic book host to open and close stories. Since the beginning, Ann has been a green-skinned, masked cowboy who always loses their pants and moves through life with great humor.
As I mentioned on the last page, when I was first creating the Sapphic Scify cover series, I was also writing letters between fictional queer authors. Ann Drew was one of the names I invented then, and it stuck around. Since their inception, Ann has let me experiment with gender, pronouns, and performance, and has helped me grow in self-confidence.
The images below are a curated selection of Ann-based illustrations from their first appearance in 2020 to the present. I believe this collection showcases the progression not only of my artistic skills and style but also of my personal understanding of myself.
